Hurricane Katrina: Folklore vs. Fact

After they managed to whip up hurricane of smears against Team Dubya, some less-duplicitous members of the MSM are letting slip that a LOT of what had been reported as fact may not be true.

Well...duh!

For those who think that people were murdered at the Superdome or are wondering where these 10,000 bodies we were promised are at, they need to check Gateway Pundit as they knocks down a lot of the myths surrounding Katrina reporting.

It's fitting that Dan "Fake, But Useful To Our Cause" Rather thinks the reporting was a fine moment in journalism. Well, if that doesn't prove that it was all lies, nothing else will!

How To Turn Your Hamster into a Fighting Machine!!

This is freaking hysterical!!!

"Don't get stuck on stupid!"

Lt. Gen. Russel Honore - 1, MSM Weasels - 0:.

Male reporter: General, a little bit more about why that's happening this time, though, and did not have that last time...

Honore: You are stuck on stupid. I'm not going to answer that question. We are going to deal with Rita. This is public information that people are depending on the government to put out. This is the way we've got to do it. So please. I apologize to you, but let's talk about the future. Rita is happening. And right now, we need to get good, clean information out to the people that they can use. And we can have a conversation on the side about the past, in a couple of months.

Cronyism or Just MSM Nitpicking?

While stuck in traffic - four car fender-bender - I was running so late that I heard the start of Laura Ingrams show. She was saying that the MSM seems to be sensing Dubya's blood in the water and are attacking like the jackals they are. (Jackals swim?)

One thing she was laughing about was Julie Myers, President Bush's nominee to head the the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security. Ingram mentioned that her uncle is Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, the departing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and that she married Homeland Security boss Michael Chertoff's current chief of staff, John F. Wood, on Saturday. She thought this was just a sign that the Stupid Party needed to stand up against the lies of the Left and blah-blah-woof-woof. Whatever.

Well, I make it to work, fire up the usual VRWC sites and see that
Michelle Malkin has the headline: "NO MORE CRONYISM: BUSH DHS NOMINEE DOESN'T DESERVE THE JOB". Here's why....

Oh, give me a ^*&%$# break and a half! This nomination is a monumental political and policy blunder in the wake of the Michael Brown/FEMA fiasco. And I can tell you that contrary to the Miss Mary Sunshine White House spokeswoman's comments, rank-and-file DHS employees and immigration enforcement officials are absolutely livid about Myers' nomination.

This e-mail I received last week says it all:

"It’s almost like the old INS days where they just throw out the political favors. Maybe she’s getting the job because she’s tight with Chertoff. Maybe it’s because she’s the niece of General Myers (Chair Joint Chiefs of Staff). Who knows, but I guarantee you this, the next time some illegal aliens commit a terrorist act on U.S. soil, people are going to be scrutinizing her resume.

Sorry to ramble but unfortunately the majority of DHS is being run by hacks, snot nose youngsters who couldn’t find an illegal alien in Tijuana, and other “connected” people with no knowledge, experience, or business being in the Homeland Security sector. I guess it’s a good resume line to have these days."

Indeed.

Everything was supposed to change after 9/11. No more business as usual, blah blah blah. But when it comes to immigration enforcement and border security, Bush keeps installing clueless cronies.

[A]s long as the borders are broken and al Qaeda continues to exploit lax immigration enforcement, I don't want her in charge of ICE. Why hire someone who needs to "seek out" those "who know more than I do" in order to her job? Why wait until the next mass terrorist attack to put those more knowledgeable people in leadership positions now and leave the paper-pushers in their cubicles?

Why the president wants Myers to head ICE at this critical moment in time--and why his supposedly brilliant strategists don't see the stupidity of Myers' nomination--defies comprehension.

White House, meet clue-by-four. Find someone better before this blows up in your faces.

Go read it all. I wonder why I don't hear Dubya knob-polishers like Hannity actually going after Team Dubya about this. Oh, he SAYS that he's critical, but it's lip-service in between the blind rimmings he delivers daily.

Malkin was the first on the Right to call for Brownie's head, so I take her concerns more seriously than Ingram's comments. Immigration is the Achille's Heel of Team Dubya and despite the Dems generally being in favor of illegals coming over and absorbing our services, taking our jobs and illegally getting to vote for Dems, they will be able to lie and say they're concerned because it's obvious that Team Dubya has no interest in REALLY securing our nation and that will make conservatives stay home in 2006 and 2008.

Candy Striper Death Orgy Luvs Dubya!

Shawn Macomber at National Review Online found another one of those non-fascist musicians and writes about this guy who runs a chain adult bookstores and loves Bush. Uh...

“The commies have closed more porno stores from us than the Bible thumpers ever did,” he said authoritatively. “There are people on both sides that want to take away everyone’s fun, whether it’s for the kids or the environment or whatever. They’d have no porn stores and we’d all be riding horse-drawn buggies to work if it were up to them. Still, nobody believes me, but the Republican party really is the party of tolerance these days.

As one might imagine, supporting Bush in the last election cycle wasn’t exactly a cause celeb in the underground music scene and Paone took more than a little guff for his politics at shows and on online metal gossip forums. He’s been mocked and blacklisted, but never defeated, only emboldened. In fact, the worse he’s treated the closer he assumes he is to the truth, he said.

Paone’s experience speaks to a larger truth: There always has been a delicious-yet-maddening irony in anarchists and punk rockers — for who the individual is supposed to be supreme — vociferously supporting candidates that want to expand government and narrow the ability of individuals to function as they choose.

“These bands and kids are dumping on government all the time, talking about all this conspiracy theory stuff and how we’re like this Nazi fascist state, and then when it comes time to vote they fall for this mindless talk and vote liberal,” Paone said. “They vote for more government. They fall into the trap. They hate the government but they’re basically asking for it to run their lives.”

Clinton: "Thanks W, now here's a knife for your back."

Impeached perjurer and all-around treasonous despot, Bill Clinton, rewarded Dubya's gesture of returning the disgraced rat-bastard to semi-relevence by making him "Co-Tin Cupper-in-Chief" with his pop, Bush 41, by attacking him for, well, not selling out nuke tech to his Commie pals in N. Korea, I suppose.

Breaking with tradition under which US presidents mute criticisms of their successors, Clinton said the Bush administration had decided to invade Iraq "virtually alone and before UN inspections were completed, with no real urgency, no evidence that there were weapons of mass destruction."

He goes on to blame FEMA for the failures of the Dems in NOLA, but what else can you expect from hypcrites and criminals like this gang?

========

BIG UPDATE: Powerline shreds the Big He for lying beyond his usual capabilities in "Uncharted Territory, Once Again":

In recent years, the Democrats have violated many of the tacit conventions of civility that have enabled our political system to work for more than two centuries. Yesterday another barrier fell, and once again, we entered uncharted waters: former President Bill Clinton launched a vicious attack on President Bush on ABC's "This Week" program.

This has never happened before. Until now, both parties have recognized a patriotism that, at some level, supersedes partisanship. Consistent with that belief, former Presidents of both parties have stayed out of politics and have avoided criticizing their successors. Until now. The Democrats appear bent on destroying every element of the fabric that has united us as Americans.

Clinton's vicious attack is even worse in the context of his wife's Presidential bid: it is fair to assume that he was motivated not only by partisanship, but by his own desire to re-occupy the White House, and, most likely, wield once more the levers of power.

AFP reports:

Breaking with tradition under which US presidents mute criticisms of their successors, Clinton said the Bush administration had decided to invade Iraq "virtually alone and before UN inspections were completed, with no real urgency, no evidence that there were weapons of mass destruction."

This attack was false in every respect. The invasion of Iraq had the support of dozens of nations. The UN's inspections could never be "completed," but the UN itself had reported that large quantities of WMDs remained unaccounted for. On the other hand, Clinton's suggestion that there was "no real urgency" about the situation in Iraq was probably sincere, as it typified Clinton's approach to terrorism: he perceived no urgency after the first bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993, or after al Qaeda's attempt to simultaneously destroy a dozen American airplanes over the Pacific in 1995; or after the attacks on American embassies in Africa in 1998; or after Saddam's attempt to assassinate former President Bush; or after Saddam repeatedly tried to shoot down American aircraft; or after the Cole bombing in 2000; or after the Taliban took over Afghanistan and converted it into a training ground for anti-American mass murderers; or after any number of other provocations. So, naturally, Clinton saw no urgency with respect to dealing with Saddam's regime. Of course, had Saddam facilitated a post-9/11 attack on the U.S. using chemical or biological weapons, you can imagine how harshly Clinton would have criticized Bush for his lack of foresight.

Clinton's assertion that there was "no evidence that there were weapons of mass destruction" is a flat-out lie.

[snipped the litany of lies debunked - please go read them]

Again and again, President Bush has tried to work with the Democrats as if they were loyal Americans first, and partisans second. He has treated Bill Clinton with a friendship and respect that, candidly, is disproportionate to Clinton's meager accomplishments. Again and again, the Democrats have rebuffed Bush's overtures and taken advantage of his patriotism and good faith. Clinton's politically-motivated tissue of lies and distortions is just the latest example out of many. But it is unprecedented, coming from a former President. That is a sad thing: the latest wound inflicted on the body politic by the Democratic Party.

UPDATE: Reader Steve Tefft sends this Clinton quote from July 23, 2003:

[I]t is incontestable that on the day I left office, there were unaccounted for stocks of biological and chemical weapons.

That was then, I guess; this is now. And 2008 is just a few short years away. So it's time, apparently, to revise the historical record.

Stalinism at CAIR: photo doctored for Islamic correctness

Jihad Watch is on the case. Is Dan Rather now working at CAIR?

This is a small thing, of course. Just a bit of silliness. But coming from an organization that brands the truth about Islam "Islamophobia" and has never answered uncomfortable questions about its own loyalties and affiliations, it raises larger issues of trust. Why do the mainstream media and many government organizations still give CAIR a free pass as a neutral civil rights group when its commitment to the truth is so manifestly tenuous?

FLIGHT 93, RE-HIJACKED

The same idiotic America-hating nimrods who are trying to make the Ground Zero Memorial into a diatribe excoriating the victims and showing liberal love for the attackers are now at work turning the Flight 93 Memorial into something that appears to praise the Islamofacist killers. Mark Steyn sets 'em up and knocks 'em down.

Flight 93 was supposed to be the fourth of Osama’s flying bombs, its destination either the White House or the Capitol. Had it reached its target, the following morning’s headlines would have included “The Vice-President is still among the missing, presumed dead”. Had Flight 93 sheared the top off the White House, that would have been the day’s “money shot”, as it was in the alien-invasion flick Independence Day - the shattered façade, smoke billowing, the seat of American power reduced to rubble.

But the dopey hijackers assigned to Flight 93 were halfway across the continent before they made their move and started meandering back east. And, by the time the passengers began calling home on their cellphones, their families knew what had happened in New York. Todd Beamer couldn’t get through to his wife, so the last conversation of his life was with the GTE telephone operator, who stayed on the line with him and overheard his final words: “Are you ready, guys? Let’s roll!” And then a brave group of passengers jumped their hijackers and, at the cost of their own lives, prevented that day’s grim toll rising even higher. At a terrible moment for America, their heroism was the only victory of the day.

Okay, let’s get all the “of courses” out of the way – of course, the overwhelmingly majority of Muslims aren’t terrorists; of course, we all know “Islam” means “peace” and “jihad” means “healthy-lifestyle lo-carb granola bar”; etc, etc. Nevertheless, the men who hijacked Flight 93 did it in the name of Islam and their last words as they hit the Pennsylvania sod were no doubt “Allahu Akhbar”. One would be unlikely even today to come across an Allied D-Day memorial so misconceived in its spirit of reconciliation as to be called the Swastika of Embrace. Yet Paul Murdoch, the architect, has somehow managed to produce a design whose two most obvious interpretations are a) a big nothing or b) a splendid memorial to the hijackers rather than their victims.

in its feeble cultural cringe, the Crescent of Embrace hands the terrorists of Flight 93 the victory they were denied on September 11th. And it profoundly dishonours Todd Beamer, Thomas Burnett, Jeremy Glick, Mark Bingham and other forgotten heroes of that flight.

Most of us are all but resigned to losing New York’s Ground Zero memorial to a pile of non-judgmental if not explicitly anti-American pap: The minute you involve big-city politicians and foundations and funding bodies and “artists” you’re on an express chute to the default mode of the cultural elite. But surely it’s not too much to hope that in Pennsylvania the very precise, specific, individual, human scale of one great act of American heroism need not be buried under another soggy dollop of generic prettified passivity. A culture that goes to such perverse lengths to disdain its heroes cannot survive and doesn’t deserve to.

Four years ago, Todd Beamer’s rallying cry was quoted by Presidents and rock stars alike. That’s all that’s needed in that field: the kind of simple dignified memorial you see on small-town commons saluting Civil war veterans, a granite block with the names of the passengers and the words “LET’S ROLL.” The “crescent of embrace”, in its desperation to see no enemies and stand for nothing, represents the precise opposite of Beamer, Glick, Burnett and co: Are you ready, guys? Let’s roll over.

There are lunatics who actually froth at the mouth at the mention of Flight 93 and insist that it was shot down by an F-16 and it's been covered up and a myth promulgated in its stead. Of course, they're insane, but that's the state of the liberal mind these days: Rotted and pus-filled, devoid of truth and consumed by madness.

New Orleans Begins Confiscating Firearms as Water Recedes

Job one for liberals? GRAB THE GUNS!!!

Waters were receding across this flood-beaten city today as police officers began confiscating weapons, including legally registered firearms, from civilians in preparation for a mass forced evacuation of the residents still living here.

No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass III, the superintendent of police. "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," he said.

Nice. In a city where some of the police JOINED IN with the looters, it's telling that the fascist-Democratic government feels the PEOPLE are the threat and need to be disarmed. That worked so well for the Jews in the European ghettos, didn't it?

The Machine Stops

Tech Central Station sends a cruise missile against the real guilty parties in NOLA.

Nagin is also responsible for failing to pre-position generators, food and water, a medical presence and portable toilets for the two sites at the Superdome and Convention Center that he had proclaimed "emergency centers" for tens of thousands of the more than 30% of New Orleanians that lived below the poverty line. And then the Mayor failed to police them.

The rapes, murders, and needless deaths that took place in those "black holes" of New Orleans are his responsibility as well. Eighty armed policemen were too cowardly to enter the Convention Center after reports of the savagery inside as late as Sunday. Troops finally searching the Convention Center on Monday found an elderly man and a young girl, battered to death, among the corpses. New Orleans's would-be reformers thought they had elected a responsible leader in former cable executive Nagin and instead they got a classic "cable guy" with a million excuses and the same lousy service.

Of course behind all this is a dirty little secret well-known in New Orleans which is also the reason almost 30% of New Orleans police precinct members deserted during the Hurricane Katrina emergency. The police were afraid to try to enforce any kind of evacuations in the violent ghettos of a city that remains one of the most lawless in America. Anyone driving a school bus down a street in one of New Orleans's "projects" trying to enforce the mayor's evacuation order would be risking his life. Had the Mayor ordered police escorts, the desertion rate of the police would have been far higher than 30%. And that is the reason for the current argument between the Mayor and his own Police Commissioner, who still refuses to enforce his "mandatory evacuation" order.

Governor Blanco's ineptitude and indecisiveness was appalling. Her direct orders blocked the Red Cross's heroic effort to pre-position desperately needed supplies at the Superdome before it was cut off by the rising flood waters as well. Attempts by the Mayor, the Governor, and The New Orleans Times-Picayune -- which had extensively reported on the state's and city's similar failures on previous occasions -- to blame the Federal FEMA efforts for failing in its role in the immediate aftermath of Katrina are patently ridiculous.

Under white and black governments alike, New Orleans has always been one of the most corrupt cities in one of the most corrupt states in the United States. Three Louisiana officials were indicted for stealing emergency relief funds prior to Katrina. It should surprise no one that the Sicilian Mafia opened operations in New Orleans before it had a presence in New York.

Those who dream of the perfectibility of human institutions through increasingly, compulsorily collective government will always attack the highest levels of government when it does fail. Republicans and Democrats alike have created huge institutions like the Departments of Education, Housing and Urban Development, and now Homeland Security, built on dreams that can never meet the excessive demands placed upon them.

If we are to learn anything from the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina, we will have to review the more practical expectations of the Framers of our Federal system. Local and state government are the primary responders. To keep their powers and responsibility intact the Federal Government is a resource they must administer wisely and decisively. Focusing on the habitual incoherence of Bush Administration communications is beside the point. There is no excuse for ignoring the key failures of local and state government in facing the challenge of Hurricane Katrina. Doing so will only ensure the next disaster.

Very nice, but there's no way the MSM will stop lying about Team Dubya when it would require them to tell the truth about black male and white female Democrats. Too many designated victim classes to protect for the Truth to be allowed free reign.

RatherGate: One Year Later

Power Line pats themselves on the back with regard to their leading the charge in blowing the lid off the CBS News and Dan Rather's nasty Big Lie smear against Dubya using forged documents as their smoking gun.

Demonstrating the power of the medium, within twelve hours after Scott did his original post, Drudge reported that CBS News executives were meeting to discuss the crisis.

Have things changed in the ensuing year? Well, sure. I think the MSM are more careful about documents now, and perhaps about other claims that can readily be fact-checked. My own impression, though, is that, far from having ameliorated since last year, the liberal bias of the MSM has, if anything, worsened. I think the fact that alternative media now exist has prompted some reporters and editors to abandon even the pretense of objectivity.

Still, the world hasn't been quite the same since "The Sixty-First Minute" and the many efforts by other bloggers--and above all, as we always emphasize, their readers--on that fateful day exactly one year ago, and it never will be.

From Air ScameriKKKa and Able Danger to revealing the truth of the failures of the Louisiana governor and New Orleans mayor in the Katrina disaster while the MSM has been furiously trying to make Dubya the scapegoat for the existance of weather itself, the Blogosphere has been a crucial source of Truth against the Big Lies of the fascist Left.

Where is PETA when THIS is happening?!?

Game over, folks. The terrorists have won.

The Huffington Post Is Hiring!

Greg Gutfeld has the job questionaire. Sample bits:

Do you have a black and white picture of yourself, with your chin resting
comfortably on your fist? When you stare at this picture, do you get a
warm fuzzy feeling, not unlike urinating down your leg?

SECTION 2: DISASTER THINKING

-Do you believe that no one can voice support of the IRAQ war UNLESS they are willing to serve in it?
-YET when it came to the flood, you readily assumed an expertise in crisis management within hours of the disaster?
-And only so you could heave blame at Bush like a monkey flinging his own feces?

A man wants to date his sister. Does this offend you?
-yes, it does. I’m fairly tolerant of many things, but not incest.
-No, not at all. Centuries from now we'll look back at this time with embarrassment - a time when we thought incest was "wrong."...And lets face it: Screwing your sibling guarantees a sex partner who knows you better than anyone. PLUS: NO PROM-NIGHT WORRIES ABOUT MEETING HER FATHER.

HUFFPO QUICK QUIZ!: Could you have predicted that the cause of a lifetime - making Cindy Sheehan the sympathetic icon of our times - could be so easily dropped once we found better dead bodies than Casey to use against the President?

Are you still owed money by Air America?
Is Al Franken not returning your calls?

Do you have dreadlocks?
And you’re white?
Do you have a henna tattoo, a charity band around your wrist, and an eyebrow ring?
Do you celebrate "individuality" above all?
And you're pushing 40?

Are you into global justice?
Have you tried to unionise sweatshop workers in China?
Have you helped organize sex workers in Bangkok?
and you actually got three back to your hotel room for sixty bucks?

The Post-Katrina Democrats

Hugh Hewitt sums it up nicely:

Slowly, ever so slowly, MSM is figuring out what "both Republican and Democratic strategists said yesterday [that] the opposition party is in danger of overplaying its hand. The harsh rhetoric, the strategists said, could create a backlash among the public and engender sympathy for a president who has been on the defensive much of the past week."

The prospect of these Democrats in power is quite troubling, with their MoveOn.org corps, Cindy Sheehan camp followers, bile-bloated bloggers and dyspeptic leaders like Nancy Pelosi and now Hillary spinning like a top.

It is becoming impossible to imagine the Democrats actually governing, so relentlessly furious are they in every endeavor.

Patrick Leahy wheezing and then shouting demands on Tuesday as to why the supplies weren't delivered to the Superdome was followed by Wednesday's confirmation that the Red Cross was blocked from doing so by the Louisiana state government, and the country has to ask itself --do we really want this blusterer in charge of Judiciary?

When Senator Reid sends a letter to Homeland Security Committee Chair Susan Collins that includes the questions ""How much time did the president spend dealing with this emerging crisis while he was on vacation?" and "Why didn't President Bush immediately return to Washington from his vacation?", you know that the Dems have decided that no matter the facts of the situation, they will try and use their allies in the MSM to turn this into an assault on Bush.

Which again leads to the question: Who could want these people in charge of anything -whether the House, the Senate or the Presidency? The greatest natural disaster in the nation's history, with hundreds of thousands of Americans uprooted and their lives literaly blown apart, and the Dems are looking for a political foothold --even though it has become obvious that their central complaint of "slow response" is the direct result of their party's chief executive's incompetence!

The political aftermath of Katrina is indeed significance. It has revealed the sound of the Democrats digging deeper and deeper into the hole they have been five years in the making.

Bush Derangement Syndrome is an ugly thing, innit? That's what happens when you live in a fantasy land built from lies and hate.

Stupid Computer User Tricks

For my geek homies, a tale of self-inflicted woe that'll make you go "whoa".

L.A.'s Thwarted Terror Spree

Lost in the shuffle of Katrina news, word of a domestic Islamic terror operation. Scary bit: They weren't foreign Arabs.

As if New Orleans didn't have enough problems, here comes Michael Moore.

The corpulent f*cktard and lifetime winner of the Joseph Goebbels Big Lie Trophy...

...is “seriously considering” turning the devastating storm and its aftermath into a documentary, which should be another steaming pile of liberal pornography, exonerating his fellow travellers who prevented the Red Cross from taking aid to the Superdome and blaming Dubya for everything, including my spilling coffee at work today.

Iraqi Scum Kill Real Hero

I think this is the guy I saw profiled on Nightline a few weeks back. He was defusing the bombs that the Religion of Peace was leaving around to kill infidels and whoever else was around. He died, not by a bomb blast, but a gunshot.

These are the heroes of Iraq, not lying mad cows like Cindy "15 minutes are up" Sheehan.

Multi-Millionaire Celebs Support Kanye West's Racial Lies.

And all this time we thought Ben Affleck was the dumb one.

Jay-Z, Sean 'Diddy' Combs and Matt Damon are among a host of stars who have applauded Kanye West for his public attack on Us President George W. Bush on Friday. During an appearance on A Concert For Hurricane Relief - a live telethon broadcast across America - West broke away from his script to voice his disgust at the media's portrayal of the Gulf Region's African-Americans and to slam the slow delivery of aid. But the biggest stir of all came when West boldly declared, "George Bush doesn't care about black people."

West's Def Jam colleague Jay-Z says, "I'm backing Kanye 100 per cent. This is America. You should be able to say what you want to say. We have freedom of speech. (The slow response to the disaster) is really numbing. You can't believe it's happening in America. You wonder, what's going on? Why were people so slow to react? I don't understand it."

Combs notes, "I think he spoke from his heart. He spoke what a lot of people feel... It ain't adding up, man. It's not making sense. If the reporters can get there and you all can get there with microphones, somebody should be able to get there with food."

Damon adds, "This guy with his moment on live television made a statement that hopefully now Bush will come out and address, because he doesn't have to address anything else... The White House Press Corp, they should all have their credentials taken away. Not one of them's an honest journalist. Not one of them asked a question of the guy."

Meanwhile, actress Susan Sarandon has a slightly different take on West's comments: "I don't think that's an original thought, but it's probably true."

OK, so we've got a record company CEO, a multi-media mogul with music and clothing empires, an Oscar-winning short guy and an aging Oscar-winning Communist sexpot mistaking the "freedom of speech" with a "license to lie". It's also pretty rich when self-made megamillionaire black men play the race and victim cards. My old boss was a black man who asked me, [i]"Where are the white Russell Simmons and P. Diddys - guys with huge success in multiple businesses?"[/i] I had no answer. Oprah? Tiger? You guys got any answers?

Even the Jedi-hating dumbass calls this crap out in "An Obscene Charge":

PERHAPS the gravest weakness of contemporary liberalism is its tendency toward preening vanity — the regrettable undercurrent that suggests the views liberals espouse demonstrate just how much better, kinder, more thoughtful, more large-hearted and more caring they are than those who might think differently about policy.

On no subject is this preening vanity more evident than when it comes to race, and the preening has been especially pronounced in the past week.

It is now generally accepted in liberal-left circles that the federal government's response to the New Orleans horror was not rapid enough because the majority of the victims were poor — and especially because they were black.

This is just about as incendiary and horrible a thing to say as can be imagined under these circumstances, and given the circumstances one might have thought a little bit of evidence would be required to offer some support for it. There has been none offered...

But his opponents on the liberal left are not satisfied with criticizing his management or his rhetoric. Instead, they are implicitly accusing him of race manslaughter. First he was deemed negligent, owing to his conservative federalism, and then he was judged an assassin, owing to his conservative law-and-order instincts.

Indeed, the very confused rapper Kanye West, after accusing the president of failing to care about black people because he thought the early response was too slow, then turned around and said the administration's efforts to save the suffering remnant of New Orleans from the predatory gangs that had taken over was an effort to kill black people.

West's remarks have been praised in many quarters on the liberal left. The fact that so many people feel totally free to say such things without embarrassment or shame — to state as fact that the deaths of untold thousands were the result not just of confusion, incompetence or the overwhelming power of nature but because of racist attitudes on the part of uncaring white people — is simply astounding in this day and age.

The motive force behind such disgusting ideas is the paternalistic idea that black people in America exist in a state of fixed victimization from which they can and will only emerge when white people "care" enough about them to raise them up and make them whole.

People used to joke about "white liberal guilt" when it came to race. But there's no guilt here. White liberals feel righteous because they believe they are faultless here — that they and only they care about suffering. They are instead assigning blame to other white people, white people who disagree with their ideology of victimization.

And so they use the basest slander at a time of tragedy to make themselves feel just peachy about their enlightened, loving and deeply moral beliefs. Well, isn't that special.

That's why I hammer on the fact that liberalism is a racist/sexist/fascist ideology. When a black person with more money than 99.44% of white will ever see in their bank accounts lies about how oppressed minorities are, it really makes you wonder what the hell went haywire in their heads?

Air ScameriKKKa Update: Al Franken's Lying Lies (and the Smoking Guns That Prove Them!)

Michelle Malkin has the goods (again) including copies of Al's signature on financial papers he claims to know nothing about:

According to a November 2004 settlement agreement between former Air American head honchos Evan Cohen and Rex Sorensen and Air America's current owners and investors at Piquant LLC, Al Franken was smack dab in the middle of negotiations over the debts owed by the liberal radio network--including the Gloria Wise loan. The agreement was signed to clear the decks in advance of the questionable asset transfer from Air America's old owners, Progress Media and Radio Free America, to Piquant. (This is the transfer being challenged by Multicultural Radio Broadcasting Inc. as a "fraudulent conveyance," which we first reported exclusively in the first installment in our investigative blog series, "A Trail of Debts.")

Far from being an innocent party with no knowledge of Air America's money woes, Franken was a signatory to the agreement. The document, published here for the first time, exposes how Franken misled his listeners and the press about his knowledge of the charity loan.

Anyone think the MSM will stop trying to convince people that Dubya was shooting black people from the open doorway of a low-circling Air Force One when surveying the New Orleans flood damage and start looking into their own?

Didn't think so.

"Niggardly" 2005 Edition

More proof that the Klan were pikers at destroying blacks compared to the liberal-fascist outfits like the NAACP. The Gary NAACP wants the Indiana BMV chief to apologize for remarks, namely the term "city mentality". Priorities? Nah, nevermind.

1. In case you don't know, Gary makes Detroit look like Las Vegas. I'm not kidding. It's THAT bad.

B. If you don't get this post's title, do a little research into past ignoble examples of grievance oversensitivity.

A New Low for the MSM?

As far back as 2003 I've known that Dubya crippling lack of basic articulation skills was going to make it difficult for him to explain critical things, like the War on Islamofascism, Social Security reform and just about anything really important where he would have to outmaneuver the MSM who are the de facto propaganda arm for the liberal-fascist-Dems to get the facts out.

Reagan had nothing in his column - no Congress, no media support for there was no Blogosphere or Rush or nothing then - yet he was able to reach out thru the media and get the tax cuts and other agenda pieces that ended the Cold War and saved the economy from Carter's total failures. However, with control of Congress and alternative outlets multiplying to get the Truth out, he's foundering and his mush-mouthed non-talking skills and his fatal willingness to turn the other cheek are giving the MSM their best shot yet to destroy him because - as I've said a zillion times before - well-told lies trump badly-told truths most of the time.

Power Line's piece "A New Low for the MSM?" undersells the headline and misses the point that trying to pick the MSM's worst misbehavior is like picking which gulag camp was the worst; they were ALL pretty bad.

The mainstream media's handling of Hurricane Katrina and the disasters in New Orleans is a disgrace, possibly the worst instance yet of media bias. Insane claims by left-wing nuts that President Bush botched the recovery effort on purpose so as to kill black people are repeated by the MSM in a chin-stroking mode, as if to say, "It's an interesting question--they might be on to something." Meanwhile, no one points out that it was President Bush who implored Governor Blanco to issue a first-ever mandatory evacuation order for the city, an action by the President that probably saved tens of thousands of lives.

Ahem, John - I mention it.

Similarly, the media yammmer on and on about the allegedly slow federal response to the hurricane, without noting that the Governor of Louisiana has the power to call out the National Guard. Accusations that lawlessness and looting in New Orleans are somehow the federal government's fault are repeated endlessly; hardly anyone bothers to criticize the looters and other criminals themselves. And where is the outrage that should be directed toward the New Orleans Police Department? They were the authorities on the scene, and they, under the direction of the city's Mayor--who had an emergency plan in place, but apparently made no attempt to implement it--had the responsibility to maintain law and order. Yet some policemen reportedly joined in the looting, while a great many others turned tail and abandoned their responsibilities.

But it's hard to defend the administration when the administration won't defend itself. Yesterday Homeland Security head Michael Chertoff declared that the feds are now in control of New Orleans, but refused to defend the government's performance so far:

Chertoff defended the job of FEMA Director Michael Brown and declined to get into a discussion about whether the government moved quickly and forcefully enough to deal with the catastrophe. He shrugged off suggestions that the demand for National Guard troops in Iraq had depleted the numbers available to respond to the crisis.

"I think when we go back and look at it lot of things worked well and some things didn't work well," he said.

That simply isn't good enough. I understand the administration's problem: it's hard to mount a defense without pointing out the scandalous performance of the state and local authorities who were responsible for emergency preparation and for the initial response to the hurricane. But if the administration thinks it can ride out the current news cycle as it has passively ridden out so many news cycles in the past, it's crazy. As Chertoff himself said yesterday:

We need to prepare the country for what's coming ... we are going to uncover people who died hiding in the houses, maybe got caught in floods, it is going to be as ugly a scene as you can imagine.

Yes, that's right. And each new horror, and each painful step in the reconstruction of New Orleans over the years to come, will be the occasion for more Bush-bashing. This story is never going to die a natural death, and it is probably too late already for the administration to combat the media-driven impression that the disaster is somehow its fault.

I've often criticized the administration for not responding forcefully enough to unfair attacks by the far left and the media--often, for not responding at all. But this time the administration's habit of quietly riding out the storm could have incalculable costs.

I'm parting company here with two people whose judgment I respect. Michelle Malkin has recommended that President Bush fire FEMA head Michael Brown...firing Brown now would accomplish nothing but to uselessly fan the flames of hysteria.

Hugh Hewitt, meanwhile, has advised conservatives to "turn the other cheek"...I think he's wrong; the MSM, in full support-the-Democrats mode, is daily making respectable even the wackiest attacks on the administration. Of course, I'm not by nature a cheek-turning sort, but I think that has too often been the administration's approach. This time, it could be fatal.

Meanwhile, the insanity continues. The Democrats know that in order to defend itself against their onslaught, the administration will have to criticize the people who really bungled the job--the Governor of Louisiana, the Mayor of New Orleans, and other local officials. So, earlier this morning Senator Mary Landrieu threatened President Bush with violence if he does any such thing:

Louisiana Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu threatened President Bush with physical violence this morning on ABC's Sunday morning news program "This Week". "If one person criticizes our sheriffs, or says one more thing, including the President of the United States, he will hear from me - one more word about it after this show airs and I - I might likely have to punch him - literally," says Landrieu.

For the first time, the Democrats and their allies in the MSM (to the extent one draws the distinction) believe that they have the administration on the run, in a way that could destroy President Bush. Destroying the President is the goal they have pursued passionately since January 2001. In that regard, nothing has changed in 4 1/2 years. The administration, it seems to me, has two choices: defend itself, or suffer crippling damage from which it likely will never recover.

Here's how Dubya can save himself: When he goes back to NO tomorrow, he makes a statement that reminds us that he was the one who called for the evacuation, yet the locals screwed it up and he wants to know why it wasn't done. Next, he blows the whistle on the incompetent Mommy Guv blocking Federalization because while she tries to CYA, he can't help the people and that's wrong. Finally, he goes into bite-lip-feel-pain mode and talks about how helpless he's felt about what's happened but was powerless to prevent because the local morons wouldn't listen before or let him help after.

That's what he should do. I'd bet money that he won't. His own f*cking fault what happens next. He can't expect the VWRC to play defense for him.

Louisiana Guv Would Rather CYA Than Help LA.

From this Washington Post story the news that while the MSM/fascist Dem Axis is pushing the "Dubya Duz Nuthin'" meme, the locals are stymieing the Federal aide efforts.

Behind the scenes, a power struggle emerged, as federal officials tried to wrest authority from Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D). Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans, a source within the state's emergency operations center said Saturday.

The administration sought unified control over all local police and state National Guard units reporting to the governor. Louisiana officials rejected the request after talks throughout the night, concerned that such a move would be comparable to a federal declaration of martial law. Some officials in the state suspected a political motive behind the request. "Quite frankly, if they'd been able to pull off taking it away from the locals, they then could have blamed everything on the locals,"
said the source, who does not have the authority to speak publicly.

A senior administration official said that Bush has clear legal authority to federalize National Guard units to quell civil disturbances under the Insurrection Act and will continue to try to unify the chains of command that are split among the president, the Louisiana governor and the New Orleans mayor.

Louisiana did not reach out to a multi-state mutual aid compact for assistance until Wednesday, three state and federal officials said.
As of Saturday, Blanco still had not declared a state of emergency, the senior Bush official said.

UPDATE: The WaPo corrects (ht: KJL) - A Sept. 4 article on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina incorrectly said that Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D) had not declared a state of emergency. She declared an emergency on Aug. 26.

"The federal government stands ready to work with state and local officials to secure New Orleans and the state of Louisiana," White House spokesman Dan Bartlett said. "The president will not let any form of bureaucracy get in the way of protecting the citizens of Louisiana."

Blanco made two moves Saturday that protected her independence from the federal government: She created a philanthropic fund for the state's victims and hired James Lee Witt, Federal Emergency Management Agency director in the Clinton administration, to advise her on the relief effort.

As noted below, Dubya called this incompetent woman and urged her to start the evacuation on Sunday, yet she did nothing and is now acting to protect her fat ass instead of helping her people. Yet, Dubya is getting blamed for what he's being prevented from doing.

A Corner e-mailer noted the irony:

If Bush was a Dictator things would have gone smoother:

- He wouldn't have had to ASK Gov. Blanco to order a mandatory evacuation, he would have done it himself.

- He wouldn't have had to ASK Gov. Blanco to send in her National Guard, he would have done it himself.

- He wouldn't have to ASK Gov. Blanco to let the feds come in and run the show. (below)

If Bush was a dictator he could have FORCED residents to evacuate at gunpoint. He would be giving orders to the Governor, not requests. It may come as news to the moveon.org crowd, but BUSH IS NOT A DICTATOR!

Next week, I'll be explaining the liberal-fascist-Dems belief in what I call the "Emperor Wizard" form of leader. Stay tuned.

Michelle Malkin: MEMO TO BUSH: FIRE MICHAEL BROWN

When your side is telling you someone needs to be sacked, listen.

Although the delay was not entirely the fault of the Bush Administration, Brown's complacency clearly didn't help. And his bumbling statements after the hurricane struck have not inspired confidence.

This is not the time to give a weak performer the benefit of the doubt. The FEMA director's role in the ongoing recovery effort is too important to be entrusted to a clueless political hack with such poor judgment.

Rather than praise Michael Brown, Bush should fire him.

Unfortunately, Dubya values loyalty over competency too often for his - and the country's - own good. While the media jackals are howling for Team Dubya blood - Tim Russert's first question to Chertoff this morning was, "Will you resign?" - SAYING the poor response isn't acceptable and then DOING nothing to remediate the causes means you're talking loud, but saying nothing.

Of course, this is the same dumbass who gave George "Slam Dunk" Tennet a medal instead of a cap to the dome.

More interesting question: If Darths Rove and Cheney are controlling things from behind the curtain, WTF is going on now, leaving Dubya looking weak? Where have they been lately?

William H. Rehnquist R.I.P.

Details here.

This throws the whole Supreme Court picture sideways as the Dems jihad to smear Sandy's replacement, John Roberts, was scheduled to start on Tuesday. The Left has been filling their diapers over losing O'Connor and been going crazy trying to find dirt on Roberts - including digging into his children's sealed adoption records (Have they no sense of decency?) - because they desperately need the Court to enact their fascist agenda by fiat, since they can't pass anything thru the democratic method. (Ironic, no?)

They've been carping about Dubya not nominating a wishy-washy center-left activist, as if the vacant seat is reserved for only alike judges. Where this causes problems is with Rehnquist passing, a solid conservative seat is open meaning they've got to decide whether they want to use all their ammo on destroying Roberts or save something for Rehnquist's replacement.

Decisions, decisions.

What's In Your Laptop Bag?

Only geeks will appreciate this, but for them it's a hoot! LOL!

What Ever Happened To Sir Mix-A-Lot?

After he blew up with that big butt song, he had another great CD called "Chief Boot Knocka", but the one after that, "Return of the Bumpasaurus", was so whack - abandoning his witty rhymes and beats for G-Funk retreads - I sold it and that was it for him.

The last I heard, he was doing something called Symposium with the guys from Presidents of the United States of America (?!?!?) and the demos played on NPR were sweet, but they never got a deal and POTUSA are back doing new music.

Reason I axe is that "One Time's Got No Case" just rolled by on the iTunes Party Shuffle and whenever I hear his old stuff, I wonder where he went. I knew he was doing some acting and Chris Rock had a brilliant line about him, but what's new?

Any info, post it in comments. Thanks.

Next week? Return of the funny. I promise.

Wait! WHO requested that New Orleans be evacuated?!?!?!?!?

Since the media has the Memory Hole running 24/7 while they mint new memes to make Katrina and the fate of New Orleans all Dubya's fault, here's an item that's going to be washed away like a weak levee:

Mandatory evacuation ordered for New Orleans
8/28/2005, 10:48 a.m. CT

Take a look at that date - that is LAST SUNDAY MORNING. Continuing...

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — In the face of a catastrophic Hurricane Katrina, a mandatory evacuation was ordered Sunday for New Orleans by Mayor Ray Nagin.

Acknowledging that large numbers of people, many of them stranded tourists, would be unable to leave, the city set up 10 places of last resort for people to go, including the Superdome.

The mayor called the order unprecedented and said anyone who could leave the city should. He exempted hotels from the evacuation order because airlines had already cancelled all flights.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco, standing beside the mayor at a news conference, said President Bush called and personally appealed for a mandatory evacuation for the low-lying city, which is prone to flooding.

"There doesn't seem to be any relief in sight," Blanco said.

WHOA!!!! What was that two paragraphs back?!? Rewind....

Gov. Kathleen Blanco, standing beside the mayor at a news conference, said President Bush called and personally appealed for a mandatory evacuation for the low-lying city, which is prone to flooding.

Hold on a gosh-darned second here!!! That says WHAT?!?!?!? Roll that back and turn it up!

President Bush called and personally appealed for a mandatory evacuation for the low-lying city, which is prone to flooding.

I thought that Dubya was playing golf and ignoring that there was even a storm in the Gulf until this afternoon, when he finally said, "OK, send some water to the white folks, but shoot those guys like I saw on the Time cover. He gave me the willies."

Just as ABC news reported that Saddam and Osama were cozy, the MSM is going to toss the fact that Dubya told Nawlins peeps to get their people out before it was too late down Ye Olde Memory Hole and sell the Big Lies that we're seeing in TV now.

Pathetic.

The storm surge most likely could topple the city's levee system, which protect it from surrounding waters of Lake Pontchartrain, the Mississippi River and marshes, the mayor said. The bowl-shaped city must pump water out during normal times, and the hurricane threatened pump power.

Previous hurricanes evacuations in New Orleans were always voluntary, because so many people don't have the means of getting out. Some are too poor and there is always a French Quarter full of tourists who get caught.

"This is a once in a lifetime event," the mayor said. "The city of New Orleans has never seen a hurricane of this magnitude hit it directly," the mayor said.

He told those who had to move to the Superdome to come with enough food for several days and with blankets. He said it will be a very uncomfortable place and encouraged everybody who could to get out.

Nagin said police and firefighters would spread out throughout the city sounding sirens and using bullhorns to tell residents to get out. He also said police would have the authority to comandeer any vehicle or building that could be used for evacuation or shelter.

The Superdome was already taking in people with special problems. It opened about 8 a.m. and people on walkers, some with oxygen tanks, began checking in.

In a neighborhood in central city, a group of residents sat on a porch. It was almost a party atmosphere.

"We're not evacuating," said Julie Paul, 57. "None of us have any place to go. We're counting on the Superdome. That's our lifesaver."

She said they'd spent the last couple of hurricanes there. They would wait for a friend who has a van to take them, because none has cars.

At a nearby gas station, Linda Young, 37, was tanking up her car.

"I'm really scared. I've been through hurricanes, but this one scares me. I think everybody needs to get out," she said.

She said they planned to leave Saturday but couldn't get gas, and didn't want to go without it, so got up early and got in a gas line.

In the suburbs, evacuations were under way.

"That sun is shining too bright for this to be happening," said Joyce Tillis, manager of the Holiday Inn Select at the airport in the suburbs as she called the more than 140 guests to tell them the hotel was under a mandatory evacuation. "It's too nice a day."

Tillis lives inside the flood zone in the community of Avondale. She said she called her three daughters and told them to get out. "If I'm stuck, I'm stuck," Tillis said. "I'd rather save my second generation if I can."

Remember this story, because the media will pretend it never happened.

Kanye West: Unamerican Idiot

I've been unimpressed with Kanye West since he made a petulent acceptance speech at the Grammys when he won for Best New Artist. He'd been snubbed at the earlier American Music Awards and made an ass of himself complaining about it and didn't do himself any favors at the Grammys, coming off as a sore winner.

His album, "The College Dropout", was a big deal, but to me it was more "big deal". It was too long and the sped-up samples were too gimmicky, but overall it was better than most of the crap that has turned hip-hop into a shadow of its former self. (Rap has sucked after NWA and PE fell apart in the early- Nineties, but that's another post.) Anyways, his new joint dropped and he made the cover of Time magazine last week:

That's right: In racist AmeriKKKa, black people don't get nothing, do they?

Anyhoo, tonight during NBC's Americathon, he went off script and started spewing racial grievance bullsh*t that is rapidly becoming the prevailing meme in the media in lockstep with the race hustlers. With the War, Cindy Sheehan and Global Warming all flopping as the Killer Lie to destroy Dubya with, they're trying one that failed when white buffalo Randi Rhodes, but may get traction coming from this jerk: Dubya does not care about black people.

As reported here via the AP and shown here at MS-NBC, West went off with a stunned Mike Myers standing next to him, looking as if he feared getting singed in the imminent lightning strike. West rambled, stammered and then announced that Dubya had given orders "to shoot us" - an absolute lie, but what's the Truth but just another person's opinion?

Any interest I had in checking out his new album evaporated and I can't wait to see the Dixie Chicks backlash hit him upside the head, because as the Time article wrote, "Statistics consistently show that 70% of hip-hop is consumed by young white audiences, but a century of anecdotal evidence is similarly irrefutable: white kids think it's cool to be black".

I wonder how they'll feel to be called murderers by a guy who's pictured rapping with Jay-Z wearing an "iced-out" platinum medalion. In Time magazine. A lot of predation on parade there, I'll tell ya. [rolling eyes]

What's so scurrilous about this garbage is that once again, Dubya is being forced to disprove a negative and it's going to be used as a deflection maneuver by the failed Democratic mayor and governor down there to face up to their share of responsibility for this disaster. But instead of facing questions, they'll play this race card and it's ALL Dubya's fault. Very convenient and a nice tactic to stop the blacks from fleeing the Dem Party, who've done nothing but make them slaves dependant on government largese. People didn't leave because they were waiting for their checks to come on the 1st. Even Chris Rock joked about "the 1st and 15th" in an old special. Real funny. Dems keep indentured voters and are now going to turn them into a race war army.

By any means necessary to regain power, right?

Remember what Rodney King asked so long ago? Then, as now, the answer remains: HELL NO!!!

ADDITIONAL THOUGHT: KANYE WEST IS THE SMARTEST MAN IN POP MUSIC? [Warren Bell]
Maybe that's what's wrong with pop music. Meanwhile, Live 8 fans will remember Kanye's statement there about AIDS: "It's a man-made disease in the first place that was placed in Africa just like crack was placed in the black community to break up the Black Panther party." Whatever happened to the good old days of educated, well-informed rappers?

That was then; this is not then.

AN EVEN BETTER IDEA: Instead of giving your money to this prick and his record label, if you were thinking of picking up his new album, give the money to the Red Cross instead. He seems to think the people down South need help and certainly doesn't deserve another cent.

The next time a liberal bores you with how compassionate and caring they are...

...ask the about this Democratic Underground post and the hateful replies in support:

I had no idea how deeply my hate for that man ran. My lack of an interaction, with a * supporter is still haunting me a couple of hours later.

I was on my home and was on the ramp getting off the highway. I saw a mini-van on the side of the road. There was a lady standing next to the van and in her arms she held her child. I can only assume her mini-van had broken down. I don't know, perhaps with so many gad stations being out of gas, she had also run out. I slowed down and started to pull over to offer her a ride. At the very last second I noticed a "W" sticker on the back of her vehicle and I sped up and drove off.

I feel really bad as a human being. That child is not responsible for their parent's belief system. They are innocent and do not deserve to be out in the heat. (It is warm but not so bad that they would even break a sweat) I try not to punish people for what they believe.

On the other hand, so many hateful thoughts went through my head. I wondered how a person could see what was going on in NO and still have one of those awful stickers on their car. How could they support an awful excuse for a human being that has let our country down and is letting Americans die after they have made it through the storm? How can someone be so blind and so stupid?

I thought that if she loves * so much, maybe he would come along and help her the same way he is rescuing all of those poor people in the weather stricken part of our country. Let's see what her hero can do for her.

I never did go back. I was so upset with that sticker and with the fact that someone would support an idiot who is so clearly running our country into the ground.

So why am I writing this? It is not to boast, I really feel bad about passing this child and not picking up their mother. Perhaps it is for a catharsis of sorts? That would be an educated guess. I suppose it is because I feel conflicted and I am writing this to try and sort through what I am feeling. There are two emotional sides, for me, on this incident and neither seems completely right or wrong to me. Even writing this, I am still not able to work through what happened. I feel like I am floating between right and wrong and am unable to grab either side.

Thanks for listening.

When Michael Savage wrote "Liberalism is a Mental Disorder" he wasn't kidding, was he? They call it "Bush Derangement Syndrome" around and about, but let's call it what it is: Sub-human hate and insanity.

If that child perishes, thanks to this motherf*cker's political vendetta, I hope it haunts this beast until they're driven mad and eat a f*cking shotgun load!!!

New Orleans: A Geopolitical Prize

Interesting article posted on the Corner:

By George Friedman
...
During the Cold War, a macabre topic of discussion among bored graduate students who studied such things was this: If the Soviets could destroy one city with a large nuclear device, which would it be? The usual answers were Washington or New York. For me, the answer was simple: New Orleans. If the Mississippi River was shut to traffic, then the foundations of the economy would be shattered. The industrial minerals needed in the factories wouldn't come in, and the agricultural wealth wouldn't flow out. Alternative routes really weren't available. The Germans knew it too: A U-boat campaign occurred near the mouth of the Mississippi during World War II. Both the Germans and Stratfor have stood with Andy Jackson: New Orleans was the prize.

Last Sunday, nature took out New Orleans almost as surely as a nuclear strike. Hurricane Katrina's geopolitical effect was not, in many ways, distinguishable from a mushroom cloud. The key exit from North America was closed. The petrochemical industry, which has become an added value to the region since Jackson's days, was at risk. The navigability of the Mississippi south of New Orleans was a question mark. New Orleans as a city and as a port complex had ceased to exist, and it was not clear that it could recover.

The Ports of South Louisiana and New Orleans, which run north and south of the city, are as important today as at any point during the history of the republic. On its own merit, POSL is the largest port in the United States by tonnage and the fifth-largest in the world. It exports more than 52 million tons a year, of which more than half are agricultural products -- corn, soybeans and so on. A large proportion of U.S. agriculture flows out of the port. Almost as much cargo, nearly 17 million tons, comes in through the port -- including not only crude oil, but chemicals and fertilizers, coal, concrete and so on….

The oil fields, pipelines and ports required a skilled workforce in order to operate. That workforce requires homes. They require stores to buy food and other supplies. Hospitals and doctors. Schools for their children. In other words, in order to operate the facilities critical to the United States, you need a workforce to do it -- and that workforce is gone. Unlike in other disasters, that workforce cannot return to the region because they have no place to live. New Orleans is gone, and the metropolitan area surrounding New Orleans is either gone or so badly damaged that it will not be inhabitable for a long time….

The displacement of population is the crisis that New Orleans faces. It is also a national crisis, because the largest port in the United States cannot function without a city around it. The physical and business processes of a port cannot occur in a ghost town, and right now, that is what New Orleans is. It is not about the facilities, and it is not about the oil. It is about the loss of a city's population and the paralysis of the largest port in the United States….

Who knew?

Gee, why weren't these buses used to evacuate New Orleans?

An aerial view of flooded school buses in a lot, Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, in New Orleans, LA. The flood is a result of Hurricane Katrina that passed through the area last Monday.

UPDATE:
Junkyard Blog want to know, too.

An angry Terry Ebbert, head of New Orleans' emergency operations, watched the slow exodus from the Superdome on Thursday morning and said the Federal Emergency Management Agency response was inadequate. The chaos at the nearby New Orleans Convention Center was considerably worse than the Superdome, with an angry mob growing increasingly violent and few options for refugees to leave the scene.

"This is a national disgrace. FEMA has been here three days, yet there is no command and control," Ebbert said. "We can send massive amounts of aid to tsunami victims, but we can't bail out the city of New Orleans."

Ebbert's job is to coordinate New Orleans' response to emergencies. Somebody should show him this picture and tell him to stop blaming everyone but himself:

But since no one mobilized these buses before the storm--ahem, Mr. Ebbert--since no one mobilized them before the storm, the poor in New Orleans had no way of getting out. And now the buses are waterlogged and useless. All 205 of them. They will go on the expense side of the ledger instead of the asset side. That's your fault, Mr. Ebbert. The blame rests with you, sir. You knew the city owned those buses, you knew where to get them, where to fuel them and you probably had a list of the drivers who operate them. Yet there they sit, half submerged.

One emergency manager with half a clue and a couple hundred drivers could have more or less saved New Orleans from turning into Mad Max territory. Terry Ebbert can blame everyone else all he wants, but this crisis is almost entirely his fault.

Now that National Guard and probably true federal troops will be put into New Orleans to quell the violence, and since the city is crawling with journalists and videographers, we're liable to get something on our TVs that will look like a cross between Waco circa 1995 and Tiananmen Square circa 1989. But with the added twist of a racial component. Great.

And it all probably could have been avoided with judicious use of a couple hundred school buses--those inside the frame above as well as the probably dozens of others outside it.

On the Brighter Side....

While there is such senseless misery, it's good to know there's still some senseless beauty in the world:

More on the Logistics of the Situation

An e-mailer to The Corner writes:

I am seeing and reading all the commentary about the "slow" Federal response
to Katrina and, perhaps its my background as a military logistician (retired
now for a number of years), but I'd like to offer a few observations. While the shameless mayor of New
Orleans sounds off like an aggrieved pimp on the radio, a military
operation, involving both Guard and active duty, that dwarfs our invasion of
Panama has been gathering and underway since Tuesday. I saw the first alert
orders go out Tuesday. (The President, BTW, issued disaster emergency
declarations even before Katrina made landfall.
) The first order of
business for any operation, relief or military, is assess needs, routes of
ingress and egress, etc. We're looking at a disaster area covering 90,000
square miles--this is not just New Orleans.
Moving the right supplies and
people to the right area in the right order is complex, even with a fully
functioning communications net and an intact road network. Here we are, 96
hours after landfall, and thousands of troops, tons and tons of supplies,
and a fleet of warships are there or due to arrive shortly. This is no
small feat.

It should be noted that Gov Blanco was slow to ramp up the LA Guard--you
don't simply call a Guardsman and tell him to report in two hours. By law,
they can take as much as 72 hours to report so that they can get their
affairs in order. If they show up sooner, great, but the point is, while
all media--and some at the Corner--obsess over the Fed's performance, the
flaccid response of local and state authorities in Louisiana made a daunting
task even tougher.
The Guard and military, for example, rely on local
authorities to provide some idea of where victims are, and, as we have
heard, Nagin's office didn't bother telling FEMA that Nagin had directed
people to the NO Convention Center. Likewise, CSAR and medical units are
not combat outfits. Having to bring in more troops to quell the animalistic
behavior of some (and that behavior, BTW, broke out before the rains even
stopped, though Blanco and Nagin didn't seem to care) means the flow of
supplies and evacuees is slowed.

In any event, I hear a lot of people talking about the unprecedented scope
and scale of the disaster, and, in the next breath, wonder what's taking so
long. There is always room for improvement and this is not to say the Feds
shouldn't take their share of knocks, but I've spoken with a number of
military officers from other nations, including Third World states, who are
studying here, and they are bemused by the spectacle of hand wringing and
media panic.

Sign of the Times

Where are the Guardsmen?

"Right where they ought to be" according to James S. Robbins on National Review Online. This is the antidote to Michael Moore's latest Big Lie about the war and the hurricane. (Look it up yourselves. His fat site shouldn't be hard to miss.)

So is the war in Iraq causing troop shortfalls for hurricane relief in New Orleans?

In a word, no.

A look at the numbers should dispel that notion. Take the Army for example. There are 1,012,000 soldiers on active duty, in the Reserves, or in the National Guard. Of them, 261,000 are deployed overseas in 120 countries. Iraq accounts for 103,000 soldiers, or 10.2 percent of the Army.

That’s all? Yes, 10.2 percent. That datum is significant in itself, a good one to keep handy the next time someone talks about how our forces are stretched too thin, our troops are at the breaking point, and so forth. If you add in Afghanistan (15,000) and the support troops in Kuwait (10,000) you still only have 12.6 percent.

So where are the rest? 751,000 (74.2 percent) are in the U.S. About half are active duty, and half Guard and Reserve. The Guard is the real issue of course — the Left wants you to believe that the country has been denuded of its citizen soldiers, and that Louisiana has suffered inordinately because Guardsmen and women who would have been available to be mobilized by the state to stop looting and aid in reconstruction are instead risking their lives in Iraq.

Not hardly.
According to Lieutenant General H. Steven Blum, chief of the National Guard Bureau, 75 percent of the Army and Air National Guard are available nationwide. In addition, the federal government has agreed since the conflict in Iraq started not to mobilize more than 50 percent of Guard assets in any given state, in order to leave sufficient resources for governors to respond to emergencies.

In Louisiana only about a third of Guard personnel are deployed, and they will be returning in about a week as part of their normal rotation. The Mississippi Guard has 40 percent overseas.

The New York Times has called the military response “a costly game of catch up.” Catching up compared to what, one wonders. National Guard units were mobilized immediately; 7,500 troops from four states were on the ground within 24 hours of Katrina — a commendable response given the disruptions to the transportation infrastructure. The DOD response is well ahead of the 1992 Hurricane Andrew timetable. Back then, the support request took nine days to crawl through the bureaucracy. The reaction this time was less than three days officially, and DOD had been pre-staging assets in anticipation of the aid request from the moment Katrina hit.

Moreover, it is simply not plausible to use the situation to critique the force structure in Iraq. The Guard is demonstrating that it can fulfill both its state and federal responsibilities, as it was designed and intended to do. Of course, it is impossible to win in these situations; critics will always find a way. A year ago after Hurricane Charley, the president was accused of responding too quickly, allegedly to curry favor with Florida voters. Back then only a few fringe characters tried to make the Iraq/Guard connection. It is a shame that the Times has drifted in their direction.

Will this Truth be reported or will it be sacrificed on the "Get Dubya" meme altar?

Beaten With The Club They Gave Their Enemies.

While driving in, I heard Bill Bennett carping about how the media was begging Haley Barbour to slag Dubya over disaster relief and thought someone was being a little defensive in the face of some serious failure on the part of the Feds.

Then I heard Dubya's feeble announcement from yesterday when turned the tag-team of Poppy & Bubba loose to beg for money - didn't we all give at the office, seems it went to buy pork? - and make another faint promise that help was on the way as if people weren't dying NOW!!! When you're dying of thirst and reporters are waking up near dead people to tell the tale, promises don't mean sh*t, Dubya!!!

Then I hit the office and see this Jonah Goldberg post on The Corner on National Review Online and it sums up the dire political situation Team Dubya and the Stupid Party are in.

The VWRC will mobilize to defend against the scurlious liars like Rhodes, Kennedy, Moore, Sheehan, Blumenthal, etc. but THEY WILL NOT PROTECT THEM FROM THE CLEAR FAILURES THAT ARE MULTIPLYING!!!

As I think about what the finger-pointers are likely to say in the aftermath of all this it's hard not to credit some of their complaints. For years, Democrats complained that we needed to spend more on "first-responders." I took this for what it often was: an attempt to pad municipal budgets with pork. But, one must concede it wasn't entirely about that either. And while it's likely this disaster would have presented many if not most of the challenges we're seeing this week, even if all that money had been spent as the Democrats wanted, it remains hard to dispute that it would have been better spent than much of the garbage in recent budgets.

And that's the point: The choice isn't between a lean, fiscally responsible, Republican budget and a porcine Democratic budget which included money for first responders. The Republican Congress has proven to be just about as disgusting in its spending as a Democratic Congress might have been. Sure, perhaps Democrats would have spent a bit more, but Republicans are supposed to be against bloated government and the stealing of tax dollars for personal projects and missions. So whatever pennies we've hypothetically saved with Republicans, their hypocrisy and betrayal of principle more than compensates.

So the question is, would the money have been better spent if the Republicans hadn't gotten their way? And, though it sickens me to say so, that is at best an open question. I have the utmost faith in the kleptocratic and dysfunctional governments of New Orleans and Louisiana to waste and steal money. But, we were supposed to be preparing --at the national level -- for a major terrorist attack for the last four years. I just don't see much evidence of that preparation. Congress re-assembled lickity-split to deal with Terri Schiavo -- a decision that didn't and does not bother me the way it bothers some. But however you define the issues involved in that case, in terms of real human suffering they are very hard to stack-up against what's happened in New Orleans. Congress should have convened yesterday and rescinded the highway bill. It should have broken-open the farm bill like a piñata and reallocated the monies therein.

For supporters of the war, this spectacle is going to be particularly hard to accomodate because it is in the interests of the political classes to keep their pork and it is in the interests of the antiwar left to frame this as a choice between Baghdad and New Orleans. That should not be the choice. The choice should be between the highway bill, ag subsidies and the like. The Don Young Highway should at least be renamed to the "Go Suck Eggs New Orleans Highway."

The next post was from Andrew Stuttaford and read:

Dead right, Jonah, and, when it comes to the question of the wasted money, the other ugly question (and one that NR has asked before) concerns the responsibility of the President who failed to veto any of this spending.

That was followed by:

EVERY SENATOR ON TV OR RADIO TODAY [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
should be asked about that highway bill. A senator who voted against it (Cornyn?--from Texas, a Bushman, he has the clout) should tell his colleagues he will make it an issue if they don't get it together to ditch it.

No one is going to ask about the highway bill and the politicians are far to greedy to give up the pork - they'll just add this to the national tab, but one thing you can count on the media to harp on is: Why didn't Dubya stop the hurricane and immediately fix everything. Sure, it's an unfair reach, but even if you roll the questions back to reasonable limits - What's the frigging hold-up in dropping off water from choppers? - there's plenty of 'splaining to do on the part of Team Dubya.

Chrenkoff: Hurricane exploitation - the quotes

Just read 'em and weep. Nothing I can pile on top of their already fetid rhetoric can make them sound any worse than they do. Check out the one who wouldn't give a dollar, but still bought themselves a candy bar. Vile scum.

Evil Corporations Give, Will Celebrities?

I see that Wal-Mart has given $15 million to relief efforts and Leona Helmsley $5 mil. and Shell Oil, $3 mil. and performing as part of the NBC benefit concert tomorrow night are Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Harry Connick Jr. Pretty Red State lineup there.

Gee, where's U2 and Bruce Springsteen and all the Live 8 performers? Don't they and Hollywood care about need in America or is their hate more important?

Duh.

The Thin Veneer of Civilization Falls and It's Not a Pretty Sight.

I've always thought that there is only a thin veneer of civilization hiding the true nature of people and the true state of affairs and watching a city collapse into anarchy befitting a Third World nation shows what's been lurking under the veneer.

While pampered liberal pundits have been using this tragedy for cheap partisan purposes because that's all they ever think about - how to gain power - what remains unanswered is what the f*ck is the holdup on getting aid to the people dying in NO?!?! When people are crying and begging for aid - food, water, medicine, ANSWERS - and wondering why we've got aid for Iraq but none for them, that's powerful stuff and something Team Dubya is going to have to answer for.

Dubya didn't create the hurricane and isn't to blame for New Orleans' corrupt Democratic machine that totally failed to have a disaster plan and to react to things, but the mishandling of the aftermath WILL be on his head and anyone who thinks that the justifiable manure storm that is sure to come is unfair is kidding themselves.

I've always been annoyed that the Lying Left chose to attack Dubya on phony things, not the actual sins he's committed. They make up crazy fantasies about conspiracies and ignore his profligate spending with his supposedly "conservative" Stupid Party cronies. THAT'S what's wrong with Dubya, not the insanity of Cindy Sheehan and Randi Rhodes.

They're going to vote $10 billion in relief tomorrow, but where's the money gonna come from? How about they repeal those pork-bloated energy and transporation bills and transfer the money to this? C'mon....we're all Americans here - can't you sacrifice that Bridge to Nowhere for the Cause? Please?

THEN FUCK YOU IN YOUR STUPID FUCKING ASSES, YOU STUPID FUCKING FUCKS!!!!!

What's most revolting is that people will take away the wrong lessons from this mess. They'll think, "We'll just toss out the Reublicans and vote for Democrats. Problem solved." Nevermind that the CITY and STATE governements in Louisiana are deeply Dem and extremely corrupt - even by usual Dem crook standards. Nope, they'll toss out the Elephant bums and toss in the Donkey bums. That'll fix things.

Since the veneer is off, shouldn't we take a good long look at the ugliness that's always been underneath? Looting of stores, not for food or water, but for blue jeans and Nikes. (Randi Rhodes encouraged looters to hit the more upscale places - get the good stuff. Fucking whore cow! She needs to get ass cancer and die!) Yeah, right. You gonna drink those Levis and drink those sneakers, Bub? Liberal apologists say that the downtrodden are naturally rising up against social inequity?!? WTF?!?!? Society is breaking down, so go get some of The Man's shit?!?!?

When disaster struck, instead of helping one another, the mob degenerated into Darwinian madness, No discipline, no desire beyond base selfishness, no motivation but to make an already horrible situation worse. The veneer is off and it's time to look at the ugliness because a lot of other people will be looking and deciding how much help "those people" merit when they reacted so badly. Some will excuse it as "desperation", but isn't it a sign of priorities? Not to survive. Not to overcome. Nope. It was time to be as ugly as they wanted to be.

I'm watching Dateline's coverage of this debacle and the refugees within our national borders and it's like watching a "Road Warrior" movie. No gas, no shelter, little hope. And it's in the same time zone as I am.

I topped off my tank this evening at Costco. I waited about 20 minutes to get to a pump - they had half the parking lot taped off so the lines could go across the lots. Gas was $2.999 - let's say it was three bucks even - and it cost about $25 to top off. I used to FILL IT UP for $33 and when I crunched the numbers for this UAV, I figured the math at $1.80/gal. This was in JUNE. Getting a econogolfcart wasn't an option, but it's nice to see that the great deal I got is going into the tank.

As part of the odd isolation in which we live in a time of war and disaster, the guy behind me in line in the store plopped down two shrimp rings and some honey-glazed ham sacks. Civilization remains in tha D, but it makes you wonder what would happen if the Dearborn-based al Queda cells dirty-bombed Detroit? How civilized would we remain?

The veneer of civilization is off. Take a good long look.

Sidney Blumenthal's Hurricane of Lies Debunked!

Non-wifebeater Sid was one of the first out of the box to blame everything about Katrina on Dubya. Of course it was all lies, but we're going to have to seek the Truth ourselves, not count on the MSM to fisk these rotten liars.

The hurricane of hatred that the left has unleashed at President Bush in the wake of Katrina has taken many voices, but the most telling might be Sidney Blumenthal's. His latest effort demonstrates that even though Bush could have done little to mitigate the damage of the worst natural disaster in American history, this hurricane gives the left an opportunity to vent all their accumulated greivances over Bush's environmental policies.

[snipped the total thrashing ol' Sid got - go read it, it's so choice]

While the left is stooping low to exploit this tragedy, Blumenthal is positively hugging the ground. What the hell do condom shortages in Uganda have to do with homeless people in New Orleans? If you belong to the cult of Bush hatred, you already know the answer.

Listened to the Mad Cow, Randi Rhodes, tonight about she was braying about how Dubya wants to "kill us all." Madness and all you need to know about the inhumanity of liberal-fascists.

Liberal Hate Unleashed: "No Money For Red States!"

Gloves off time!!! Those motherfuckers who call themselves "progressive" while claiming that Dubya is "pitting races/classes/states against each others - he's a divider, not a uniter" need to fess up and admit that they're petty hateful assholes who don't give a shit about anyone who doesn't support their fascist policies!

As posted on THE BRAD BLOG: "Katrina: Yes, You CAN Blame Bush", this craven monkeyfucker seems to forget that the City of New Orleans is overwhelmingly Democratic with Dem control of the city govt. and statehouse, yet he thinks that because the state had the poor judgement to vote for Dubya instead of the Feckless Crapweasel, then the rich folks on the Blue States - gee, what happened to liberals being for the "little guy"? - should ignore the misery of this disaster to make a political point. I'm sure the people dying in the ruins of NO will appreciate being sacrificed on the altar of liberal revenge.

FLIP THE SCRIPT: What would've happened if Red America told NYC and D.C. to suck rope after 9/11, since they voted for Gore?

Liberals have finally sunk to the level of the Islamofascists and have identified themselves as being unfit for rational civilization.

Katrina and Disgusting Exploitation

James Glassman lays the smack down on the Big Liars seeking political gain from tragedy.

Tragedies happen, and my daughter and her family are happy just to be alive. Their losses and those of hundreds of thousands of other innocents deserve mourning, prayer and respect.

That is why the response of environmental extremists fills me with what only can be called disgust. They have decided to exploit the death and devastation to win support for the failed Kyoto Protocol, which requires massive cutbacks in energy use to reduce, by a few tenths of a degree, surface warming projected 100 years from now.

Katrina has nothing to do with global warming. Nothing. It has everything to do with the immense forces of nature that have been unleashed many, many times before and the inability of humans, even the most brilliant engineers, to tame these forces.

[snipped stuff about how hurricane strength is DECLINING despite the Big Liars lies - read it all]

Not only has the intensity of hurricanes fallen, but, as George H. Taylor, the state climatologist of Oregon has pointed out, so has the frequency of hailstorms in the U.S. (see Changnon and Changnon) and cyclones throughout the world (Gulev, et al.).

But environmental extremists do not want to be bothered with the facts. Nor do they wish to mourn the destruction and death wreaked on a glorious city. To their everlasting shame, they would rather distort and exploit.

Of course the Left lies: They have nothing of merit that people (non-fascists, that is) would willingly support. With nothing to offer but fear, it's natural that they'll exploit fear to catapault themselves into power over the chumps on hand when the rains started.

The Storm After the Storm

As the craven Democrats and liberals already jockey to blame everything from Katrina to the flooding to the looting to God-knows-what's-next on Dubya - because everything that's bad from natural disasters to the Detroit Lions eternal sucking is his fault, right? - it might be useful to read David Brooks' New York Times column today.

Hurricanes come in two waves. First comes the rainstorm, and then comes what the historian John Barry calls the "human storm" - the recriminations, the political conflict and the battle over compensation. Floods wash away the surface of society, the settled way things have been done. They expose the underlying power structures, the injustices, the patterns of corruption and the unacknowledged inequalities. When you look back over the meteorological turbulence in this nation's history, it's striking how often political turbulence followed.

Civic arrangements work or they fail. Leaders are found worthy or wanting. What's happening in New Orleans and Mississippi today is a human tragedy. But take a close look at the people you see wandering, devastated, around New Orleans: they are predominantly black and poor. The political disturbances are still to come.

That the Left is more interested in reaping political reward than offering succor to the benighted of New Orleans reveals everything that is dark and evil about liberalism and its false claims of concern and compassion.

UPDATE: A textbook example of the Blame Dubya meme can be found here. Be sure to read the shrill hysterics in the comments section as the smug liberals ignore reality to bray about how STOOPID Dubya/Red Staters/Christians/Etc. are compared to them.

In the Fantasyland of liberal madness, what would they have said if Dubya HAD signed Kyoto (thus crippling the American economy); HAD given the levee project all the money it had wanted....screw that, WHAT IF AL GORE OR JOHN KERRY HAD WON, IMPLEMENTED EVERY FASCIST-LIBERAL SCHEME THEY DESIRED AND NEW ORLEANS WAS STILL DESTROYED BY A HURRICANE?!?!?!?

Laura Ingrahm was talking this morning about how if the Democrats were in power and Republicans made a peep that varied from the "let's pull together as ONE nation" songbook, they'd be pilloried for it, but since it's the other way around, the Dems are going to tear at Dubya like the venal hypocrites they are.
